Thank you for this thoughtful article. I am touched by how you "punctured your grief" by kneading your bread. I am a baker; but a very neglectful sourdough starter parent. I have recently lost my mother and am in a bad head space. I find comfort that you found comfort in bread making.

This was such a cool story! Thank you for sharing. The part with the TMNT after the starter went down the drain made me burst out laughing! Yes, I needed that this morning. I started my sourdough adventure in 2018 and haven't stopped since. Sir Bobby Farts-Alot is stronger than ever and helps me cope with life per se. Mom is still alive at 93 with dementia in Germany while I'm here in the US. Presently I have Covid (first time AND with all the boosters) but after going through the aches and pains I can't see myself making a trip anytime soon to see her and possibly bring her germs from the airport. Covid is nasty the first few days, getting easier with Paxlovid after--if you're healthy and lucky. And knowing what to expect helps too. But how would someone with dementia deal with that? Sir Bobby didn't have an answer either. He gets boosted once a week with freshly milled flour and a tad of milled Vienna grain from the homebrew store. ;) Next time your partner gets some grain, have him pick you up a lb of Munich or Vienna; mill it and use it as a snacky addition to your feeding flour and also as a dusting alternative. It makes a really tasty crust. Have you used the spent grain from the beer yet? I add up to 100g per sourdough loaf; turned into a beer smoothie with beer & water in my Vitamix and added to the flour. Solid. Healthy. High fiber. And totally yummy with cheese & homemade Sauerkraut. ;)
