Cinnamon rolls are awesome to make with kids, because there's so much room for creativity. You could make a PB&J filling. A pumpkin spice filling. S'mores. Lemon Curd. Or something savory, like pizza rolls or mushroom and parmesan. I love to let kids lead the way with their own flavors.
Haha, it's true. I work as a kid's cooking teacher, and pull out the cinnamon roll move on kids from as young as 4 up to teens. We usually cut them with dental floss, which kids of any age seem to get a kick out of.
I have fond memories of making cinnamon rolls with my grandma when I was a kid! My kids like to help with the sweet stuff, like cookies and birthday cakes.
This looks like a great book! Cinnamon rolls are my favorite thing to bake with my kids because there are a lot of interesting little steps they enjoy helping with.
When my kids were preschool-age, we made turtle breads...homemade bread dough formed into the shape of a turtle. I also did this project with their preschool classmates. Now, some 30+ years later, I make them with my grandkids. They love it!
My favorite bread project with my kids is probably hot cross buns. We made them early in the 2020 lockdown and have made them at least once each spring since! (We add mini chocolate chips instead of currants or raisins.)
I like to start students off with Amish Friendship Bread. They get to see how a starter works and then make a quick bread. Next, I go with a no knead recipe to take away the intimidation factor. After that, we’re off to the races.
I love introducing kids to baking. I usually start with nonyeast bakes, as they are faster - banana bread and/or sugar cookies. For yeast based products, I usually start with Pizza or Pretzels - savory, small to handle for little hands and a fairly fast product to keep them engaged.
I'm another person who likes making cinnamon things with my kids! Cinnamon raisin bread is such a great one, because of the fun of brushing on the filling and rolling it up, but then also, there is nothing better than toasted cinnamon swirl bread with butter on it. And it has been a thing that has shifted my kids over into realizing that you can make these delicious things pretty easily yourself.
Since my kids are still a bit young, they've mostly watched me bake or help add pre-measured ingredients into the bowl. One thing that they've recently enjoyed is helping me make sourdough discard waffles on Saturday mornings. My 4 year old is just starting to get the hang of whisking...
So much fun. Right now my boys just help with the folding of sourdough but my older son loves to make muffins and mix all of the dry ingredients with his (freshly washed) hands!
My kids love making monkey bread! We’ve put our cinnamon sugar dough balls in a small cake pan and then in to the crock pot so they can watch it bake closely. I love the idea of passing my love of baking to my children and am always excited when they want to be involved. (Also, it has eased my perfectionist tendencies having them help😆)
I’ve never made bread all the way through with my daughter, but I have always involved her when making enriched breads that require the stand mixer and call her over to help me do a very important job: determining whether my dough passes the Windowpane Test. When she was smaller I just asked her to look and see and tell me whether it was good enough. Now, if she’s willing, I give her a piece and we both test and compare notes. She’s my quality control checker! She takes this task very seriously.

I didn't see your comment until mine posted, but I think it's pretty great that the first two comments on this post are about cinnamon rolls. :)

I love baking with my 6 year old son. He likes to measure and spray water when needed, but his favorite is making pizza.

With kids, cookies are always great, especially if you keep dough balls ready in the freezer. But my favorite to do with kids of any age is challah.
I love baking bread with children! I've taught my own to bake bread, even taught some of their friends! Now my grandchild and I bake bread together.
I love to make focaccia and pizza with kiddos! It's always a hit.
Gina! You won the book! Email me back with your details and I'll ship it out.
